Why Right-Brainers Rule

In the last post, we made the case that the Creator Economy is booming and that it is more than a trend. We suggested that the future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers, creatives and holistic “right-brain” thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who does not. We also promised to explain why on the following post. Well, here it is:

Simply, technology is replacing much of the things we use the left brain to do. While it is not a hard and fast rule, and there is some proven overlap, the left brain is known to be responsible for math, logic, and reasoning. Similar to tech, left-brainers like to take things step by step and are often great at following a set of directions. They can be seen as more technical, structured and organized. Tech does it faster and, unlike humans, tech does not need to eat, drink, sleep or take a bathroom break. More importantly, tech is not governed by emotions.

Since much of the world has grown to be ruled by systems, left brain thinkers have monopolized many leadership and governing positions. Technology has slowly been eradicating that through entrepreneurial disruption and a hunger for more and more efficiency. Systems are best run by better systems, after all.

What technology cannot replicate is empathy, motivation, emotion and creativity; attributes of the right brain. As tech’s dominance engulfs us all, there will be an increased need to manage, support, inspire and lead the human beings it actually serves. That ability will largely come from right brain thinkers. Creators, and those governed by right brain thinking, will be more and more needed to invent new possibilities and govern our new human-centered needs. Society will need the things machines cannot do. This is illustrated in the brilliant 2019 TED talk by the solar artist and polymath, Shala and Daniel H. Pink’s best-selling book A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.

Moral of the story:

Empower creators on their terms and find new ways to partner with them. Ways that go beyond promoting your proximity to the cool kids. It will soon be unavoidable.
